Taking off to early

Do you think she is taking off to early? And what do you do about it.

Yes, I think she is. I know some people have placed a bar on the ground about one stride out. The dogs don't really jump it but it makes them think about adjusting their stride so they don't step on it. I think you can also put several jumps close together (like with 0-1 stride in between) so they have collect and jump over instead of across. I'd start with really low jumps though so she gets used to it and doesn't hurt herself-we used to do that with horses. I believe it's called a bounce. I'm sure there are other techniques but I'm not sure of anything else specific.

I wouldn't have noticed if you hadn't put the video in slow motion, but yes, the top of her arc is not directly over the bar but a good distance before it. Maybe the running surface? Didn't you say she's never run on carpet before this weekend? That would affect her jump arc and how confident she is about her takeoff.

It is very cleary that Miley is taking off too early. I don't know what to suggest but have you watch Susan Salo's Foundation Jumping video? I don't know if that is going to help Miley with her jumping. I did try that with Sizzle when he was younger and it helps him to take off and did a proper jump.

Gosh - it's really noticeable when you slow down the video - that's a huge jump Miley is making all the time. It's really amazing (especially the double jump)! But not the way you want her to jump I know. I read lots of people retrain jumping with Susan Salo's dvd. I've never watched it myself.

Happy to know I'm not the only one who spent the day analyzing my dog's trial videos :)

Miley does look like she is taking off early. I have no idea what you should do about it! LOL.

Miley definitely has has no idea what she is doing jump-wise, and it will get worse over time and may lead to injury and stutter jumping if you don't give her a jumping education program. Definitely get Susan Salo's Foundation Jumping DVD and follow it. It is worth every penny. I have been to Susan Salo's seminar a long time ago, and the video is just like sitting at the seminar only better as she is able to show more when demonstrating jumping problems and techniques. If you ever get the chance, go to her seminar and sign up for a working spot. It helped my sheltie a lot. When Miley understands jumping, her times will actually decrease and she will really enjoy herself even more as jumping will become effortless. There is good reason Susan Garrett brings her up to Canada every year and uses her jumping program.

I think the last two jumps look very early but I wonder if that has to do with her not knowing how to work her body and you are turning, so she is trying to read that, on the straight away jumps where she is doing a soft turn and by you she doesnt look early to me. Some jump grids might really help

She is taking off early for a couple of jumps but not all. I haven't noticed it as a problem in your other videos. She has nice form, just not sure of the take off point on several jumps in that video. Could be the different footing.

Jump grids are great but you need to be careful to do them correctly and not overwork them.

I went to a Susan Salo seminar with Summit two years ago and highly recommend it. I've heard her video is great!
