Practice course jww

I took this course off of "Dog training, Dogs and life" blog. I set it up the best I could. I first ran it with a rear cross after #4. Several times she missed #5 and if she did get it then she took the wrong tunnel entrance. I practice just #4-6 and we seem to get it but when I added it all together, we had the same problems. Then I ran Guiness through it too. Then we rested because I needed a break. It was a lot of running.

">

So after sitting a while I had an and idea. What if I front crossed after #3. I tried it and it worked great. For the first time I was able to think differently and fix my problem before driving home. Usually I'm on my way home before I can think of how fix the problem. WhooHoo , what a break through for me. I was so excited. Maybe I'm on my way to running courses correctly.
">

After that I decided to just run a couple of dogwalks and a-frames. The dogwalk looked good. The a-fame she was slow on the down side. When I got home and reviewed the video she is skipping with her right back leg down the frame. The same problem leg.

">

I don't think she is injured because I haven't seen any skipping at all on any of our walks and we walk a lot. I watch her like a hawk. I'm not really sure what to think of it or how to fix it.

First of all, congratulations on switching to the FC and doing a great job with that sequence! WooHoo!!!

I am not a vet(and I don't even play one on TV, LOL) but I really don't think Miley is hurt at all. I saw what you meant by the skipping on the video, but I think she is just slowing down to get the target and moving her feet out of the way of the slats and nothing more. She is being cautious to get into her 2o2o position like the good girl she is! Hopefully people who know more than me will write in with advice for you on how to speed her up to get into position. But please don't freak out about her leg - I seriously think she is ok!

You can get some great distance with Miley, she takes your direction so well!!

Hope that the skipping on the AF didn't mean anything... I don't really know what to think of it either, sorry. :)

Miley looks great, Diana! I wouldn't worry about the A-frame, either--looks like she's just picking her way down. I did notice on the slo-mo that when she got to the bottom, she almost did a mini "handstand" to stop at her target. Have you tried moving the target away a bit further so she doesn't have to stop at such a steep angle??
I've been told that ideally, dogs doing a 2o2o on the A-frame should be a bit further out with their front feet--keeps their back at a less steep angle and is easier on their front, as well. Plus, its easier for them to go down a bit quicker.
The table is coming along great too! Keep up the good work!!

I think Ricky is right, I think the skipping is more about being careful about hitting the slats than lameness. She DID hit the slats with that right rear foot a few times. I'd like to see a shot from the left to see if she manages to miss the slats with that foot more consistently. The right leg may be her "problem" leg because she may have less awareness of that leg, so it jams into the slats more. I've seen videos of dogs being taught to back up on things where their awareness of their two hind legs is drastically different and the task is much more difficult with one leg than the other.

I did see the skipping in the video and I agree with those that say that maybe she's skipping to avoid getting hurt. Why do they have slats on the A-Frame, anyway? All I'm hearing lately is about dogs getting hurt on them and stuff, so I hope there's a good reason for their being standard style because I'm starting to have problems, too!

That looks like a fun JWW sequence. I wish I had room because I'd love the try out the two different handling methods between the first few jumps. I think I would have went with the FC too.. it's funny, I used to rely on backs ALL the time and now I kind of sense myself switching over to fronts.. not sure why...

Congrtulations on figuring out how to fix your handling! You always solve OUR problems, now you solved one of your own! Whew. The rest of us are so relieved...because we are all CLUELESS! LOL.

Slats are stupid.

Great job with the FC. It's a much clearer choice for the dog and you were so far ahead of her with your beautiful lead out anyway. With the RC, you had to slow way down to get her ahead of you and then you were out of position to support the rest of the course.

Funny, the skipping thing looks similar to what Whisp did Wednesday over the apex on 3 legs but Miley did it for less strides. It was also her 'bad' leg.

Both Jumping videos look very nice. In the first video, I think you were too far ahead of her to do the rear across, maybe if you try the rear across again, try hanging back to let her go in front of you to do the crosss behind. I recently have a lot of rear across practise and I started to understand to position myself better when doing the rear across. When practise/training, I like to try two or three different ways of handling to see which one is better for me and the dog.

I saw Mily skipping on the A Frame but cannot figure it out why she did that. It could be like what the other said about her missing the slat but I don't think she skips to slow herself down, that is not Miley, she is always very enthusiastic about agility.

it looks like she is trying to avoid the slats, maybe she caught a toenail once and is now cautious, i see lots of dogs doing that - mine included

p.s. the FC after #3 worked great (i would have handled it that way too so I could get ahead for the tunnel entrance).

she is so cute.
