The park

I walked the dogs at  the  hilly park today.  We came across several items.

This deer antler was there too but but several hundred feet apart.  In between was  snake skin but the picture turned out really blurry.  I was using my phone. The deer antler one was blurry too so I took this one when I got home. I dont know if you should let your dog chew on deer antlers from th woods  but I did.

Guiness did really well walking.  About 30 minutes into the walk he stopped and didnt want to go. So I took out my stethoscope and listened to his heart.  It sounded regular but it was only beating 58 beats per minute.  Wow, that seemed slow for walking up and down hills.  They werent steep or anything but I thought his heart rate would be faster then that.  But what do I know.  After resting we started walking again.  He had no other problems until the end of the walk.  He started rolling in the grass and seem very happy with himself in the grass.
After he was done rolling I tried to get him going again.  Nope, he didnt want to go.  I listened to his heart again, it was about the same, 62 beats per minute. So we've been walking almost an hour and then he rolled around on the grass multiple times. You think his heart rate would be some what higher.  Hmmm... weird.

I really dont know what to do.  The cardiologist will cost probably 500.00.  Oohh did you hear that?  That was my husband falling out of his chair when he just read that price.

You might want to check out this list of health clinics created by the cavalier club - there might be on that's doable for you

Just this summer I had a cardiologist examine my beagle who has a wicked heart murmur (sp?) he did the doppler (I think - it was the ultrasound that he watched) - wrote a whole report and sent it to myself and my vet for $175 - he was a board certified cardiologist so I feel as though I got good info.

oh my goodness that's a lot of money! Is there some research we could do online? Like finding out what a normal heart rate is in a Sheltie? Or something? Katie does that too, on longer walks, just sits down and won't go anymore till we rest.

Glad Guiness had some fun walking. I don't know what a dog's active heart rate should be. I sure hope there is nothing seriously wrong with him. $500 is a lot of money but what can you do - you have to find out.

YIKES, these specialists are EXPENSIVE arent they? when I had to take Breeze to the rehab vet specialist I was in total shock at how much that ran, it is crazy. Looks like you happened into quite the area at the park

I hope you are able to figure out what is going on with Guiness, it just seem so unfair that first you are dealing with Miley's injury and now this. :-(

Poor Guiness! I think a trip to the cardiologist is worth while! Sizzle wasn't insured and I have to pay £610 for the tests but that give me a peace of mind! Colin did fell off his chair though!

Hugs to Guiness xxx

Specialists are very expensive, but I was told years ago that they went through much more training than your regular vet. So, you have to pay them extra for their knowledge. It satisfied me at the time....maybe that will satisfy your husband?

Or maybe you can tell your husband it is far less money than the bicycles that Lance Armstrong rides? LOL.

I hope you are able to make a decision about what to do. It is a tough situation.

Vet bills sure add up quickly. I hope you find some answers!

I wonder what happened to the deer. Surely, he wasn't eaten by a snake?

Those specialists are soooo expensive. I'd never be able to afford that if we had a problem.

Is the first picture the same antler that they're chewing on in the other pictures? Because the first picture doesn't look like an antler at all, it looks like a jaw bone.

Here's a picture of a deer's jaw: http://www.nawwal.org/~mrgoff/photojournal/2003/fallwin/pictures/09-06jawbone.jpg

Hope you hear good news from the cardiologist, you and your dogs are in our prayers.

Um, I'm no specialist but 58-60 bpm is waaaay too low for a Sheltie at rest (usually 90-120 or so) and definitely way too low for one out walking! I don't think I've ever examined a dog of any size who was healthy with a heart rate less than 80 unless it was fast asleep. If an owner told me they thought the heart rate was 60, I would be like "Are you sure you did it right?" but with you being a nurse, I'm sure you know how to take a heart rate. Can your vet do an ECG, just to screen him? Some vets can do an ECG transmission digitally (called a Cardiopet), where there is a cardiologist who reads and interprets it. Usually less than a full consult with a cardiologist. I hate to be the source of undue worry if it turns out fine, but I would be worried.

Loralei, I was worried that maybe I wasnt doing something right. But I checked a groin pulse at the same time as an apical pules. It was the same. I checked my one chihuahua and hers at home was 100. So I think its right. I called the vet and Guiness pulse at the vet was 130 but Im sure he was a nervous nellie. Im not sure what to think. I guess Ill find out Monday when I see the specialist. Thanks, Diana

He might not have the low heart rate all the time, but when he does have it, it makes him weak so he doesn't want to walk.

I would see the cardiologist if it were me. I know I live in the midwest and prices are lower, but $500 seems high just for the consult and ultrasound.
