Dogs off leash

I was with the dogs this morning at the park. This is a view to the water. You walk down that dirt path right there and it goes down to the water. Notice you cant see the bottom. So Im down by the water taking pictures. There isnt much room and no where to go but back up the bank.

This is a view of the bank I was standing on from the other side. Just a small corner of dirt to stand on. Well Im down there and all of a sudden there is a Rottweiler looking down out us. He is neither happy nor threatening. He has his head down and is staring at us. Im thinking, "Crap, there is no where for us to go if he comes down". So I yell out, "Hey Im down here with my dogs". ( I cant see up to the sidewalk to see the owner). No response. So I yell again, "Hey can you call your dog?" Still no response. They were probably to scared to say anything because your dog isnt suppose to be walking off leash. Ugh. I decided to yell at him to "Go Home", "Get" repeatedly. He finally left. Ugh, I dont know why people cant keep their dogs on leash when walking the paths.

Here are some of the pictures I took when down at the bottom of that bank. (Guiness wouldnt participate)

Then we surprised this blue herring. I wish the bird had turned out clearer.

your pictures are stunning! I read regularly, but don't think I have ever commented before. But I always enjoy all of your photo's. Miley and Guiness are gorgeous!

I'm sorry you had a scary Rottie experience. All dogs should be kept on leash when required, but those of us who have controversial breeds have an extra responsibility! Even as an owner of the mildest Rottie girl you would ever meet, I realize caution is necessary with Rotties.

When a Rottie has that head down "checking things out" look it can be very intimidating, but that may have been a sign that he was a good boy. Rottie people call it a sign of a good Rottie when they have that "wait and see attitude". I call it the 'wait and see wether I need to react to this" attitude. It is a sign of good dog nerve. I posted a pic of Meeka in her wait and see posture not long ago in the post What is Dog "Reactivity Part 3- Anecdotal Evidence Illustrates Maizey's Reactivity". Maybe it would help you avoid a scare next time if this looks like similar behavior to what you witnessed today.

Of course not being there I can't say for sure, and you are obviously experienced in reading dogs!:)

Again I'm sorry, and I'm sorry this is such a long comment. It is a subject close to my heart as I feel bad for all the good Rotties out there who get such a bad rap, mostly from the irresponsible owners! (but that is a whole 'nother rant:))

Thanks for your comment Katie. I didnt mean anything toward Rotties. There is a beautiful border collie that I pass a lot at this same park and he is reactive. Guiness is reactive to some dogs too. I just never know how he is going to react. Guiness could have been the dog to start all the problems and I worry about his reaction more then the other dogs. Guiness could have caused a huge fight. So it really didnt have anything to do with that breed, sorry if it was offensive. Diana

Love the herring! Amazing photos again.

90% of the dogs we meet on hikes are off leash. I feel lucky that the majority of the people I run into are respectful with their dogs and will hold their collars/recall them when they see Kona's on a leash. I'm lucky that Kona does well with other dogs because there's always that person who's dog is charging at us full speed and they'll send me a holler, "My dog's friendly!" I'm always shocked that these folks never consider that maybe my dog isn't...

Love, love, love that first photo of Miley!

I panic whenever I encounter a dog of leash....too many times it has ended badly. Frustrates me to no end. I'm glad the dog left you alone.

Hi Diana, no worries at all! I wasn't offended at all! Guess I just can't resist a chance to get on my Rottie ambassador soap box.:)

I also completely understand about worrying when you have a reactive pup. I worry constantly with maizey that way. She can look pretty "aggressive" when she is posturing out of fear. You never know how another dog will react to that, especially with a bigger dog, it can be very dangerous to our pups. And they are almost all bigger than Miazey!LOL

Thanks for being responsible w/ your pups-we all should be!

I know what you mean though because we especially get that at the beach, dogs running at us and you just can not always tell their intentions, sometimes you can tell they are just happy go lucky dogs with no responsible owner, but sometimes they are giving mixed signs...and there usually is no owner anywhere in sight and when they do come by they seem obblivious to the scare they may have given people or that other people may have dogs that do have issues with other dogs-and even the happy go lucky dogs are impossible to keep them from running all over my dogs, even if they mean no harm, if I had my reactive dog there it would be trouble. Recently there was a really nice agility sheltie that was badly attacked down at the beaches here in the San Diego area and just a few weeks ago Gabriella who has Zing had her dog Now attacked at the beach by a dog just running loose. It is scary when there is no one there to control them and you just dont know who that dog is. Just seems a simple thing to stay with your dog and supervise them where there are other dogs and people no matter how nice your dog is-to protect your dog if nothing else-ESP when those are the rules. Sorry but after having a reactive dog that is a real pet peeve of mine.

My favorite photo of the day is the first one of Miley. The water is so still her reflection looks so cool.

Glad nothing bad happened with the off-leash dogs you met up with.

I hear you. I have to exercise the girls during off leash hours in our park and the dogs there are so rude - they love to slam other dogs and mine hate it. I'm very wary of the northern breeds, especially the Siberians and Malamutes, especially around Whisper. I usually make mine do a down stay and then I leash them up until the dog passes. It makes them not-chase-able. Of course the owners think it's okay for their dogs to be rude. It's really disgusting. At least when I see my students out there, they are mostly more conscientious.

Glad everything was okay. I hear you because that annoys me as well. I love the photos.

Wow! I love the photos but that one of Miley by herself in the mist is extraordinary! A calendar shot for sure!

Off-leash dogs (in a leashed area) annoy me to no end. Sage has a bubble when she is on leash (she's fine when we are hiking off leash). Any dog that gets in her space while she is leashed will get snapped at.

Seems very strange to be discussing dogs being off/on lead as most places here apart from streets are off lead areas so i would be more expecting a dog off lead. The owner should have been there though.

Looks like a beautiful place!

I agree completely diana. You just never know for sure with an unsupervised dog, and when you are being careful with one of yours that already has struggles it is best to err on the side of caution. If that an be an err that isLOL.

Especially with Maizey I worry cause she is so much smaller than most other dogs. (9lbs-very small cavalier) I'm glad youa re cautious! Really isn't that all our jobs when it comes to our 4 legged friends?

thanks for sharing this it is a very interesting conversation!

I love that first photo of Miley in the mist. You should send it to a calendar or something. I hate when dogs are off leash too. My husband can't even ride his bike around our house because of the loose dogs.
